Prof Aswin Sekhar
Prof Aswin Sekhar FRAS is the first professional Meteor Scientist from India. At the Asteroids Comets Meteors Conference 2023 in Flagstaff USA, International Astronomical Union (IAU) named a minor planet '33928 Aswinsekhar' in honour of his body of work in meteor science. His work helps to safeguard satellites and astronauts from shooting stars and minimise outer space risks.
Top European Journal Elsevier Icarus selected him as Best Reviewer in the year 2022. He is part of the Membership Committee of Royal Astronomical Society London. He is a Judge of multiple prize Jury Panels of the American Astronomical Society. He is part of the Leadership Committee of IAU Commission F1 on Meteor Science. He has been part of Scientific Organizing Committee (SOC) of IAU Meteoroids Conference 2025 and various American Astronomical Society Meetings (2020-2026). He has been invited as an expert reviewer to select NASA Postdoctoral Program applicants for multiple cycles.
He actively contributes articles for various national and international media. He coordinates various science outreach programmes to donate telescopes to rural and tribal schools and universities in India to inspire young students into space science. He was invited as a TEDx speaker by KIIT Bhubaneswar, largest tribal university of India. His vision in life is to see 'One telescope for every school in India'.
He is a co-author of the first meteor science textbook "Meteoroids" published by Cambridge University Press. He is an author of the children's book "It is My Space" published by Mathrubhumi Books. Other than being a scientist, speaker & writer, he is also an enthusiastic swimmer, Tabla player, chess player and badminton player.
