Stanly Johny

Stanly Johny is the International Affairs Editor at The Hindu. He holds a PhD in International Studies from the Centre for West Asian Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. He anchors the newspaper’s international coverage and writes editorials, Op-Eds and reportage. He has been writing on geopolitics and Indian foreign policy for over a decade and has reported from different parts of the world, from Washington to Moscow and Tehran to Tel Avivi. His writings have also appeared in publications of leading think tanks, including the Middle East Institute, Washington, D.C., and the Manohar Parrikar Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses, New Delhi.

He is the author of three books: The ISIS Caliphate: From Syria to the Doorsteps of India (Bloomsbury, 2018); The Comrades and the Mullahs: China, Afghanistan and the New Asian Geopolitics (HarperCollins, 2022); and Original Sin: Israel, Palestine and the Revenge of Old West Asia (HarperCollins, 2024). His fourth book, forthcoming from Hachette in 2027, examines the changing geopolitics of West Asia.

Stanly is a Visiting Professor at Krea University, Sri City and an adjunct faculty member at the Asian College of Journalism, Chennai.
